Endoscopy (sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy, gastroscopy, bronchoscopy)

9868808 JA

Hypnotic technique for sedation of patients during upper gastrointestinal endoscopy

One practitioner's series of 200 patients successfully undergoing upper GI endoscopy under hypnosis, with script.

1998 Am J Clin Hypn 40;4:284-7

Zimmerman, J.

9717776 RCT

Influence of coping style and precolonoscopy information on pain and anxiety of colonoscopy

Before colonoscopy, patients were classified by coping style as either information seekers or information avoiders. Those who received information congruent with their style had less anxiety and shorter recovery time.

1998 Gastrointest Endosc 48;2:119-27

Morgan, J., Roufeil, L., Kaushik, S., and Bassett, M.

9672340 RCT

Audio and visual stimulation reduces patient discomfort during screening flexible sigmoidoscopy

Patients receiving audio and visual stimulation during sigmoidoscopy had less discomfort, anxiety and anger than controls.

1998 Am J Gastroenterol 93;7:1113-6

Lembo, T., Fitzgerald, L., Matin, K., Woo, K., Mayer, E. A., and Naliboff, B. D.

8189006 JA

Hypnotic relaxation: a new sedative tool for colonoscopy?

Hypnosis alone very successful for colonoscopy in a subgroup of more hypnotizable patients.

1994 J Clin Gastroenterol 18;2:127-9

Cadranel, J. F., Benhamou, Y., Zylberberg, P., Novello, P., Luciani, F., Valla, D., and Opolon, P.

11310081 RCT

Effects of a single music therapy intervention on anxiety, discomfort, satisfaction, and compliance with screening guidelines in outpatients undergoing flexible sigmoidoscopy

Patients who listened to music during sigmoidoscopy had less anxiety and discomfort.

2000 Gastroenterol Nurs 23;4:148-56

Chlan, L., Evans, D., Greenleaf, M., and Walker, J.

11756911 RCT

Relaxation music decreases the dose of patient-controlled sedation during colonoscopy: a prospective randomized controlled trial

Listening to music significantly decreased sedative medication requirements for colonoscopy, increased patient satisfaction scores, and made it more likely that the patients would be willing to repeat the procedure.

2002 Gastrointest Endosc 55;1:33-6

Lee, D. W., Chan, K. W., Poon, C. M., Ko, C. W., Chan, K. H., Sin, K. S., Sze, T. S., and Chan, A. C.

11235440 CT

The effect of preprocedure teaching, relaxation instruction, and music on anxiety as measured by blood pressures in an outpatient gastrointestinal endoscopy laboratory

Relaxation instructions and listening to music significantly reduced blood pressure during GI endoscopy.

2000 Gastroenterol Nurs 23;3:102-10

Salmore, R. G. and Nelson, J. P.

9412917 RCT

Effect of relaxation music on patient tolerance of gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures

GI endoscopy patients who listened to music were less likely to feel that the procedure was unpleasant.

1997 J Clin Gastroenterol 25;1:343-5

Bampton, P. and Draper, B.

10492293 RCT

Effect of music on state anxiety scores in patients undergoing fiberoptic bronchoscopy

Anxiety was not reduced in patients listening to music during bronchoscopy. (Music was same for all--piano improvisations at 60 beats/min.)

1999 Chest 116;3:819-24

Colt, H. G., Powers, A., and Shanks, T. G.

10934067 JA

Predictors of pain control in patients undergoing flexible bronchoscopy

Patients undergoing bronchoscopy who experienced more pain were more likely to have poor overall health and a history of asthma. Scope insertion discomfort and decreased knowledge about the procedure were also associated with increased pain overall.

2000 Am J Respir Crit Care Med 162;2 Pt 1:440-5

Lechtzin, N., Rubin, H. R., Jenckes, M., White, P., Zhou, L. M., Thompson, D. A., and Diette, G. B.
